Sepsis is defined as a dysregulated host response to infection, resulting in acute organ dysfunction. Although the condition has been thoroughly studied in the intensive care unit (ICU), accurate data collection outside of this setting is less well-developed. It is thought, however, that the number of cases in the wider hospital is far higher. We previously reported the results of a point-prevalence feasibility study and subsequent study of all Welsh centers using the 1992 International Consensus Criteria for sepsis (SEPSIS-1), using electronic data collection and real-time data monitoring.
