The selection of an EF should be a conscientious process based on a number of factors, including the patient’s clinical and medical status. The ingredients need to be carefully evaluated in their quality and quantity as they may affect recovery. The content and type of carbohydrates should follow the daily amounts recommended by the WHO. FODMAPs in particular should be assessed since these may be the cause of GI intolerance. Animal protein should be preferred over vegetable sources since utilization and absorption are higher.
