New Sepsis Diagnostic Tool Receives $4.87M Grant to Guide Critical Care
medicine.washu.eduA team of doctors and engineers at Washington University School of Medicine received a $4.87 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to create a new, rapid diagnostic device for sepsis.
This handheld device will be used to quickly classify sepsis patients into two distinct groups:
- High-risk, hyperinflammatory: These patients have a severe immune response.
- Less severe, hypoinflammatory: These patients have a milder response.
By providing a precise and fast diagnosis, the tool will allow doctors to give more personalized, targeted care to patients in intensive care units and in military and combat settings, where sepsis is a significant threat.
The hope is that this new technology will help save lives by ensuring patients get the right treatment faster.
