Decoding Sepsis: Fast-Tracking Diagnosis with SeptiCyte RAPID

medrxiv.org

SeptiCyte RAPID is an FDA-cleared gene expression test that measures a patient’s immune response to help diagnose sepsis. It provides a “SeptiScore” from 0 to 15, divided into four bands that indicate the likelihood of sepsis versus non-infectious inflammation (SIRS).

Researchers analyzed data from 889 critically ill patients across 19 hospitals in the US and Europe to see if the test’s positive and negative likelihood ratios (LR+ and LR-) could reliably rule sepsis “in” or “out.”

The test proved highly accurate, regardless of whether a patient’s blood cultures were positive or negative:
-High Scores (Band 4): Had a high LR+ (median 6.97), making it an effective tool to rule in sepsis.
– Low Scores (Band 1): Had a very low LR- (median 0.085), making it an effective tool to rule out sepsis.

Because these results are available early—well before traditional microbiology cultures come back—SeptiCyte RAPID can give doctors the confidence to treat sepsis immediately or safely explore alternative diagnoses, saving both lives and hospital resources.
