Haloperidol Prophylaxis in Critically Ill Patients with a High Risk for Delirium
ncbi.nlm.nih.govThe use of the delirium prevention protocol seems to result in improvement of several delirium outcome measures. Prophylactic treatment with low dose haloperidol in critically ill patients with a high risk of delirium likely appears to exert relevant beneficial effects. With the encouraging results of the recent and present studies, we feel that a randomized prospective intervention study in ICU patients with a high risk for delirium using prophylactic haloperidol should be conducted. It should be considered, given the few side-effects of a low dose haloperidol, to also investigate the effect of a higher prophylactic dosage of haloperidol.
