Superbugs Are Winning – Time to Fight Back with the Four-Pillar Plan
mdpi.comThe relentless global surge in multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections, vividly illustrated by high rates of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter in Western Romania and echoed worldwide, is outpacing outdated diagnostic and treatment strategies in critical care.
A powerful, integrated counterattack is now urgent: proven prevention bundles (hand hygiene, device care, environmental cleaning), rigorous antimicrobial stewardship to curb unnecessary exposure, rapid molecular diagnostics that deliver results in hours instead of days, and judicious deployment of new antibiotics only when guided by precise pathogen identification.
Alone, each pillar helps; together, they form the only realistic strategy to slow microbial evolution, protect patients in the ICU, and preserve the last-line drugs we still have before resistance renders them useless.
