A new study published in the American Journal of Infection Control (AJIC) shows that ultraviolet (UV) disinfection technology, called PurpleSun, eliminates up to 97.7 percent of pathogens in the operating room (OR). Using this light wavelength might help defeat superbugs. This technology is designed for use in operating rooms, patient rooms, and other healthcare settings. Five-point multi-sided sampling proved effective for assessing disinfection performance on all exterior sides of equipment. Focused multivector ultraviolet (FMUV) produced significant overall reductions of the microbial burden on patient care equipment in all study phases and independent of manual cleaning and chemical disinfection. A 5-point multi-sided sampling protocol was utilized to measure the microbial burden on objects inside and outside the OR environment in a 3-phase nonrandomized observational study.
