The COVID-19 pandemic was an unanticipated event which revealed our lack of preparedness for dealing with large numbers of infectious patients whilst maintaining excellent care quality.

Notable problems arose with AMS and IPC, driven in large part by fear of the unknown and likely contributing to the heightened risk of secondary MDRO infection.

Through standardizing approaches to data and systematic examination of the causes, we can hopefully avoid the paralysis of fear and mitigate these harms in both routine practice and be better prepared for the next pandemic.
