The term ‘burnout’ describes the collection of symptoms and signs, both physical and psychological, experienced by individuals due to their work. It is defined as the condition where professionals ‘lose all concerns, all emotional feeling for the people they work with, and come to treat them in a detached or even dehumanised way’. Individuals often feel a sense of emotional exhaustion, indifference, depersonalization, and a lack of desire for personal achievement. Maintenance of wellness and treatment of burnout both require a carefully considered, biopsychosocial approach.
