Hemorrhagic shock is a state of systemic hypoperfusion secondary to acute blood loss which may have either traumatic or atraumatic etiologies. While gastrointestinal and traumatic etiologies are some of the most common causes of hemorrhagic shock, other causes such as ruptured aneurysms and post-partum hemorrhage may also cause rapid intravascular depletion. Systemic shock from acute intravascular volume loss will subsequently lead to decreased cardiac output, impaired tissue oxygenation, end organ dysfunction, and without intervention, death.
